TOP SKILLS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER LEARNING ONLINE

10 + 1 AWESOME SKILLS TO LEARN ONLINE

In a previous post, you read on why you should learn skills and get certified, now read further to see my recommended list of skills you could acquire online.

This is my personal recommendation and even though some skills might appear tougher than others, every skill here would be absolutely helpful to whoever acquires at least one of them. If you can do more than one, that’s awesome, but it’s important you have a specific one you major in and build your online portfolio around. I’ve said enough, enjoy your read, 10 skills you could learn await, let’s go!

 1. Coding

The ability to speak computer language is becoming increasingly more important at a rapid speed. Languages such as Java, Javascript, Python etc. are relevant in web and app development and if you can learn these, believe me, you would be in high demand. Plus, isn't it fun to be able to speak to man and machines too?

 2. Web development

Still on moving businesses online, the advancement and improvement of technology globally, especially with the advancement of Web3.0, and the Internet of Things (IoT), there is an increasing necessity to understand how the web works. You should consider trying this out if you're internet savvy or just curious. Web designers and developers are becoming high in demand, and won't you want to be one of them?

 3. Digital Marketing

This is a very broad field, but in summary, a digital marketer is one who is devoted to carrying out strategic marketing activities on internet platforms. Various areas of specialisation include: Social media management, Social media advertising, Email marketing, SEM, Display Ads among others. The easiest way to get in is to start off as a social media manager, build your niche and portfolio, then consider moving on to other areas. If you're an avid user of social media apps, this is the perfect fit for you.

4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

As businesses transit to being online, a lot of businesses get lost in the myriad of websites competing for customer's attention. What's the way out? SEO! With SEO, your website is optimized to turn up prominently whenever people look up services you provide on search engines. This brings traffic, and traffic brings sales, and yeah, that's why you're in business.

5. Data Analytics

This is the practice of examining, cleaning, transforming, and modeling data sets to discover useful information that draw conclusions and make appropriate decisions for your business. Data analysts help improve business performance and their importance in the labour market today cannot be overstated. In 2020 alone, job listings for data analysts grew from 360,000 to 2,700,000. If you haven't boarded the train already, now is probably the best time to jump aboard if you feel its the right move for you.

6. A new language

You probably didn't think this would make it to the list, but it did, and for good reason too. The ability to speak more than one international language makes you a more viable candidate for global jobs. Acquiring basic communication levels and certs in languages such as Chinese, French, German, Arabic, Korean, and Spanish positions you better for jobs, whether professional or not. It also boosts your chances of getting accepted when applying for visas to any of the countries that speak these languages.

7. Copywriting

Copywriting is simple, it's all about writing copies that sell, right? As simple as that sounds, it's a cut-throat competitive job, as everyone seeks to create the best copy so they can make the sales. You learn how to craft what will persuade people to not just listen to you, but buy your product. If you are a writer, an arts student, or a marketer, this is a very important skill. If you can't be one, you'll have to hire one.

8. Microsoft Office Suite

The ability to use Microsoft Office tools, especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook, will for the foreseeable future, be relevant in the corporate space. If you aren't familiar with these tools yet, chances are that you will struggle at being functional in the office no matter how good you might actually be at your skill.

The apps are fairly easy to learn, but I’ll recommend you go further than basic. It helps greatly.

9. YouTube

YouTube is growing in popularity and acceptance globally. The online television of the world with the biggest collection of on-demand content, it is a great avenue to create a presence for yourself and of course, command attention and engagements which could in turn be monetised. Google offers an academy which trains you on how to properly set up your channel, profile it for the right audience and make yourself seen, heard, and obeyed. If you want to promote a brand using videos, for educational, informative, or even entertainment purposes, you've found your place.

10. Graphic Design

Catchy! Cool! Attractive! These are the new must-haves of anything that seeks to catch the attention of internet users today. Who is better qualified to meet this need than a graphic designer? Becoming a graphic designer gives you the ability to create attractive, catchy designs, which gives a desirable image to brands, starting with yours of course.

You learn to use tools in Adobe Suite such as Photoshop, Illustrator etc., Corel Suite, and of course, Canva. It takes a lot of effort, but it's worth it.

STAR BONUS

Google Analytics

If you ever heard of the saying, last but not the least, there might never have been a more true application than here. Google Analytics is one of the biggest things you can learn to use. It’s maybe too technical for this post (Google has a full academy for it!), but I feel it’s learnable; after all, people are doing it, including myself.

Google Analytics is a platform for tracking and monitoring activity on your website. It’s how you get to know and understand your audience, their behaviour, demography etc., and optimise it as you serve content and tailor your website to fit customer needs.

Every website, every brand, every app connected to the internet needs this for optimal performance, and if you can do this for them, they won’t just need Google Analytics, they’ll need you too!

So, there it is, you’ve just read my 10 + 1 awesome skills worth learning. Did one, at the least, catch your attention? Let me know. Next up, we will talk about what to consider when choosing a school to learn online.
