Remembering our Furry Heroes
1. Adventure from the Book of Virtues
Featuring Zach, Annie, and Plato, this was one of the healthiest, and safest things could watch on television. Adventure from the Book of Virtues was a comic series that had children who had questions about life and things they didn’t understand. They would usually start off the episode having violated a moral law of some sort and would suffer for it, till they meet with their animal friends. Their questions are answered by a buffalo, who tells them stories from a book, the Book of Virtues.
Their other animal friends would also chip in occasionally and
provide further insight for the kids. The series ran for 3 seasons initially
before it was remade in the 21st century.
It is the only one on this list that actively features humans.
2. Capitol Critters
Capitol Critters was a cartoon series about pests that lived
in the White House, Washington dc. They were rats, mice, and roaches constantly
tormented by the cats in the White House. The main characters were: Max and
Berkley, two mice; Jammett and Trixie, two rats; and Boze, a cockroach.
The short-lived series was a satire that addressed issues of
the day back then, and even now. Some of those issues include: gun control,
segregation, and drug abuse.
3. Animaniacs
The Animaniacs series was a Warner Bros production as a tribute
to the three Warner siblings; brothers, Wakko and Yakko, and their sister, Dot.
The 99 episodes series featured over 20 characters, and had to be broken into 274
segments.
It was largely a variety series, with the siblings as the
main characters. The siblings were three creatures of undecided specie, which
were locked away in the Warner Bros. tower that eventually escaped. They possess
some form of lunacy, and interact with studio workers. They share the series
spotlight with other cartoon stars.
Other characters include Ralph, the security guard, Slappy Squirrel, Hello Nurse and Dr. Otto, Buttons and Mindy, Chicken Boo, Pinky and the Brain among others.
4. Pinky and the Brain
"Gee, Brain, what are we going to do tonight? Same thing we do every night. Pinky, try to take over the world!"
Two lab mice at ACME Labs are the central characters of this darling series. One is the sweet, adorable, and innocent Pinky, who is sidekick to an evil genius, Brain, a mouse with an incredible intellectual ability.
It is always the ambition of brain to take over the world, and he uses Pinky all too often in his sinister plans. He usually comes very close to success, only to be defeated by one tiny flaw in his always near-perfect plans. The flaws are often as a result of emotional reactions either on his part (which rarely happens) or on the part of Pinky (which happens a lot).
5. Tom & Jerry Kids
One of the most successful comic series ever produced, Tom & Jerry is just one cartoon that people hardly ever grow out of. The ever persistent cat and mouse chase story is a classic. Tom & Jerry Kids featured the legends as toddlers, toddler cat and toddler mouse who appeared more innocent than their grownup selves. It was a spin-off that featured additional characters in the series more prominently. It had Spike and Tyke; Droopy and Dripple, among others.
Like any Tom & Jerry production, there was a lot of
mischief, friendship, partnerships, traps, doom, and yes, vawulence.
